Public Transit Program
In keeping with an ongoing commitment to implement "green"
practices into University operations,
the
University of Miami bolstered its
discounted Miami-Dade Metropass and Tri-rail pass
distribution to University of Miami faculty, staff, and
students in 2008. In an effort designed to reduce parking demand and traffic
congestion on the campuses and municipal roadways and
promote more affordable and less stressful commuting
options, the University doubled its monthly distribution
of public transit passes.
For several years, employees and
students have purchased transit passes from Medical Finance, taking
advantage of bulk purchasing discounts offered by Miami-Dade Transit and
Tri-rail. However, effective June 1, 2008, UM offered
significant incentives aimed at promoting public transit among full-time faculty
and
staff that included free or 50% reduced transit passes based on annual
earnings. This includes
Metro rail, Metrobuses, "Park and Ride"
express buses, and Tri-rail. The new Public Transit Program is administered
by the Security and Parking Office at the Medical Campus.
Employees and students
interested in the public transportation program must read and comply with the
provisions of the
Public Transit Program policy.
Employees may NOT hold a campus parking permit and a reduced fare
transit pass during the same month. Employee may not share, sell,
or give their transit passes to others and they must use the passes to
commute to work on a regular basis. Rates, restrictions, and other
requirements can be found in this policy and at the websites of
Miami-Dade Transit
and Tri-rail.
Violations of the policy carry significant penalties that can include
termination, prosecution, and suspension from the program. Those who wish to join
the program must electronically complete,
print, sign, and submit the
employee or
student
election form at the links found here. Election forms must be received by
the
10th of the month to qualify for a pass in the upcoming month.. Early elections forms are
encouraged and appreciated as
they allow more time to process requests.
Tri-rail subscribers must
first obtain an EDP (Employer Discount Program) card in order to
participate and use a discounted Tri-rail pass. The Security and
Parking Office will apply for the card on your behalf and have the card
mailed to your home address. Please be sure your home address is
correct in MyUM. If you already have and EDP card, please send a photo
copy with your election form.
If you miss the 10th of the
month cut off date, a limited number of passes will be available for
purchase from the parking office between the 25th and 4th of each month.
Please visit the South Florida
Commuter Services website and read about their emergency ride home
program, carpools and vanpools.
The
Emergency Ride
Home (ERH) program provides free taxi service in emergency
situations for registered commuters in Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm
Beach Counties 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
